The Beginning Of The NHL

This week I will be telling you about how the NHL got started  and how it grew.

The first ever NHL games recorded was on December 19, 1917. The two games were held in Ottawa and in Montreal as well as the first actual game of hockey (Montreal).

The first ever Stanley Cup playoffs were in the year 1893. I know it sounds weird because the Stanley cup was awarded to a team before the NHL was created but it used to be called something different and in a different league. The team that won it that year were the Montreal Hockey Club, they later became the Montreal Canadians. Fun facts they won the most Stanley cups of all the teams with a total of 24 since 1915.

The way the NHL grew in size and grew more popular was they would make teams from throughout North America and have them play each other. It eventually got televised which made it grow even more popular. Ever since the NHL started it has been pulling in a good amount of fans each year

There  was only a few teams in the early 1900’s but now there will be 32 teams in a couple of years which is really cool. That is how the NHL  started and some facts about the beginning of the league.
